A NEWARK HOUR features artist Diego Molina (also known as Diegumberrto) as part of a series centered on Newark’s food culture, community traditions, and shared social spaces. Exploring cultural foodways, family ritual, urban agriculture, and downtown gathering, the installation highlights how food functions as memory, identity, care, and celebration across Newark communities.

Diegumberrto is an illustrator and muralist influenced by popular culture, dreams, cartoons, spirituality, and Latin American culture.
Working in a distinctive personal style, he builds complex visual worlds through drawing, illustration, and painting, reinterpreting familiar forms and expanding their symbolic and narrative possibilities.
Diegumberrto has participated in residencies, exhibitions, festivals, and editorial and scenographic projects, with a multidisciplinary practice that continues to explore themes related to culture and illustration. He currently lives in Newark, New Jersey, and has exhibited at the Queens Museum in New York. His most notable mural commission includes a large-scale work for the New York Red Bulls.

This installation explores drinks, nightlife, brunch culture, and social gathering as essential parts of Newark’s downtown food landscape. From juice bars and cafes to cocktail lounges, brunch destinations, and late-night venues, these spaces shape how people experience leisure, celebration, and connection in the city.
Downtown gathering places often reflect the rhythm of movement— before events, after work, on weekends, and during cultural festival—making them important sites of exchange and energy.
